Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Panasonic FV11VH1/Ceiling Fan & HtrCustomer Review: A really nice bathroom fan, with newer version available! FV-11VHL2 Summary: 5 Stars
We bought the newer version of this fan (FV-11VHL2) from an electrical supply store called Beverly Hills Electric. It does not seem that you can purchase this on Amazon yet, although I certainly would have if I could have. My comments apply equally to both fans FV-11VHL2 and FV-11VHL1, as their performance and characteristics are very similar.
The price for these fans varies quite a bit, but generally, they can be found in the $250 range or a bit cheaper if you shop around. Our local high end plumbing place offered them for $400 a pop, showing how much mark-up is out there.
There are several things to note about this fan.
1. It is rather big and several reviews have commented on the fact that this is not your simple pop this into a hole in the ceiling type of installation. I agree with the reviews that say it is best 1) in a new construction application, or 2) in a situation where you do not mind ripping open the drywall in your ceiling (our situation) and later patching.
2. FYI! It *REQUIRES* a dedicated electrical line. Current electrical code *requires* that heater fans have a dedicated line. This heater in this baby pulls 1400 watts, enough to max out a single 15 or 20 amp circuit. If you are like us, when you put this into a remodeler application, to replace some old crappy heating fan, you may find that your older heater fans don't have a dedicated power line. You are gonna have to have an electrician run one from your main panel or a sub panel that has extra circuits if that is the case. Or if you are really good, you can do this yourself.
3. You can connect the switches in almost too many ways. There are 4 different switchable things on this fan. 1) 4 watt night light plug, 2) dual 18 watt 4 pin fluorescent bulbs (2 35K (3500K) color temperature bulbs are supplied with the fan), 3) fan and 4) heater.
The Heater needs a 20 amp switch. I have read reviews where people said they put their heater on a timer switch--FYI, you will need to get a high power 20 amp timer switch to handle the heater (a rather rare item), as most timer switches are only rated at 1000 W max. We just put the heater on a standard 20 amp decora rocker switch (we could not find a lighted decora 20 amp switch).
The night light is switchable and can be on a separate switch, but you need to set this up and plan ahead for it. Note, the night light is not "light activated" or some such thing, or toggled in any way with the normal fluorescent lights. I am not sure if there is some way to rig it up so that it comes on when the main lights are turned off. We rigged it switchable and you will need to put it on a separate switch if you intend to use it for it's intended function--as a night light. We put the night light and fluorescent lights on a dual lighted decora switch, as I had originally planned only a 3 switch box.
I have read reviews that the fan is so quiet that you won't know its on. This has not been my experience. We have our fans in bathrooms that are relatively small. The fan is indeed quiet, but you can definitely hear it, and I am guessing that would be the case unless your bathroom is barn-sized. We have put ours in a timer switch so that it can clear the moisture from the bathroom and we don't have to remember to turn it off. That works just great.
4. The two fluorescent bulbs supplied are too bright and too white for my taste. You get two 18 watt 35K (3500K) color temperature bulbs. They produce a truly great deal of *very* white light. We opted to substitute these with one 18 watt 27K (2700K color temperature) bulb in each. Note that you cannot lamp this with 4 pin 13 watt bulbs, as these do not fit into the slots made for the 18 watt bulbs. FYI.
Overall, a pretty slick item and I am happy that I bought it. It looks and feels incredibly sturdy, it is quiet, it moves a great deal of air, makes a great deal of light. The built in night light is a bonus. Given the complexity of the install, it is best done by a professional (two needed--electrician and drywall/painting) or by a pretty advanced do-it-yourselfer.
