I have owned the 2 line version of the Panasonic for about 4 months. It's our first Panasonic phone. So far, my husband and I like the phone. I didn't find it at all difficult to set up and program. I don't think I had to refer to the owner's manual but a few times. It's a pretty intuitive menu. Yes, there are a few steps to go through to access the phone book, but I don't think it's very onerous. I just love not having to look up phone numbers.
Here are some things I find "peculiar" about the way the phone operates and I hope that Panasonic will fix this in the future:
1) Groups. When you enter a phone number in a handset or base unit, you are asked to put the entry into a "group". I thought this was kind of cool, but then I found that the groups didn't transfer when I broadcast the entries to other handsets.
2) Entering new numbers into the handsets. Once you have entered your phone directory into one of the handsets, you can only send it to the base unit. You then have to send the entry to the other handsets either as a total resend of the phone directory or for just one entry at a time. And you can only send it to one remote handset at a time, which is a pain. I am not totally sure, but I think if you resend the entire directory you will wind up with duplicate entries, but I am not totally sure. In any event, it would be nice if you could send the new numbers to all remote handsets at one time from a remote until and not have to go through the base.
The phone has great range from the base unit. The handset works outside of our house up to about 200 feet away. We haven't tried to go any further with it. It might work even further away.
I think Panasonic makes good products. My sister has owned a similar Panasonic phone system for years and had no problems. I would definitely purchase this system again.
BUT ONE THING - the base unit does not wall mount in a vertical position. It sticks out horizontally from the wall (90 degrees perpendicular). It's small, but looks odd sticking out like that. ALso, the ring tones are whimsical at best. I couldn't believe I could choose the "Ride of the Valkeries" as my ringtone! The ring tones are not the same between the base and the handsets so you might want to turn off the ring tones on phones that are close to each other and let just one prevail.
The manual is pretty awful. Try using common sense first. I can't remember totally at this point, but I think the manual that came with the additional handsets didn't fully explain how to register new phones to the base unit. I remember having a little trouble with that feature, but I got it to work.
Rereading this, it sounds like I have a lot of complaints, but I really do like the system.
