I'll keep this as short and sweet as I can. I make knives as a hobby. Mostly folders, and some pry bars of titanium along with pocket clips and other things associated with edged tools. Point is thats what I'm taking pictures of most days when I need a camera. I just wanted a no brainer camera that any ole bloke could use without having to fry his brain trying to figure the darn thing out. I don't know much about mega whatever or all the various toys and tools this camera has on it so if thats what ya want you'll probably be best off reading someone elses take but if you want my opinion here it is.
I know great when I see as easy as I know bad. This camera is great! It takes great pics although I had to play with a few test shots of various things I planned to use it for to get the hang of it. My first pics looked like the camera was focused more on the background about 3" back than it was on what I wanted to take pics of and focus on. Took me about ten, maybe fifteen minutes of playing with it to find a setting I liked that showed my products easy enough to upload to my forums and web site that were looking good and not like the camera was focused in the wrong place. What I take pics of to show now displays to folks accurately what they are gettin'. This little camera has great battery life and its easy to tote. I don't feel intimidated by it due to it's complexity but its much more capable than I will probably ever know or realize. For me this camera is all that I'll ever need right here on this setting and will probably stay there. Its a given the camera is more capable than me. I'll give that to ya but the simple truth is this little camera for the money makes taking pictures as easy as walking, a true point and shoot and I like it! Its working for me well, takes great indoor or outdoor photos and basically has pleased me to no end since getting it.
The blue color is nice. I wish I'd gotten silver but blue is fine. The initial pictures I took at 14M setting seemed off to me. I don't know what it was and coulnd't put my finger on it but they were too large to upload without having to resize my pics to upload anyway so I changed that to 3M setting and these come out great. The web setting on the camera is good also but my site can handle the bigger pics of the 3M and I like what I'm seeing there for details. You can read even the finest print, see flaws so well that the camera actually has picked up things in taking pics for me that I had to go back to the shop to fix what it saw that I didn't! Not sure thats good or not but it is the case. :-)
The Lumix is light weight really but it has a heft for its size and feels quality. It came with all you need to get going and I like that. On the 3M setting it has room for a lot more pictures in the built in memory. To me thats fine and I see no reason to buy a card at this point. Loading the pictures to my computers was a snap. It walked through the process and I was uploading pics in no time. Not bad for someone uncomfortable with these electronic gadgets really. Everything in the manual and particularly the one that comes with the disc is pretty good. It covered every question I had and seemed easy to find.
In conclusion. I like the camera. Its got all I wanted with the exception of a view finder which I do miss I won't lie to you. However, I see now since my last camera purchase, which was a Fuji if that matters, that its harder to find view finders than it was back when these digitals first started hitting the market. Battery life and type has improved too I must say! I'd say if you are in the market for value or bang for the buck as they say that this camera should certainly be high on your list. Honestly its taking some very nice pictures for me and I really don't think I'd be any happier for my needs if I had bought the much more expensive Cannon or Nikon I was looking at before going 'cheap' with this one figuring if I didn't like it at least I wasn't into it for much. If you are like me, buying these things on the net sight unseen really you always wonder if its going to be one of those things you wish you hadn't bought. Rest assured this little Panasonic product will probably have a pretty high % chance of being something you are glad you bought. Odds are good you'll be happy with it. It may be that some that know more about these things could pick it apart for why its not as good as another. My point is though that if your needs are similar to mine and you just need something easy to use and simple to figure out that this is good choice.
