Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD (Red)

Customer Review: I cannot think of a feature I'd want that this doesn't have
Summary: 5 Stars

Once my wife and I decided we wanted a new digital camera that would also take HD video, I spent (literally) weeks going over reviews, buyer's guides, manufacturer's web sites, and going to retail stores to see the cameras. No matter how I analyzed the results, only one camera kept coming out in the top 3 choices, and was number 1 in most categories: the Lumix ZS7. So we bought it and I couldn't be happier about that decision.

What sets this camera apart from the others is the lens. I've posted some pictures that I took right after opening the box; it's hard to tell the difference between the picture of a (fake) flower taken from 4 inches and a picture of the same flower taken from across the room at full optical zoom. And the picture of the text on a printed paper was taken with the lens body actually sitting on the paper! If you need a camera that will take a closer picture with sharper, crisper details...I don't think you could find one at any price.

Besides the iA setting, which is suitable for almost any purpose, there are a couple dozen specialty scene settings. The one I use most often is the panorama assist; take the first picture, and the camera shows you part of that image only moved to the opposite side of the screen...line that up now, and you're ready for shot number 2...repeat until you've taken the full angle panorama you want. This is soooooo much nicer than the "I'll try to make sure I have a good object for reference and hope the computer software can do it" approach I had to do with my older camera (I cannot tell you how much I wish I'd had this when I was in Italy doing panoramas in Pisa, Rome, and Florence). And if none of those are what you need, you can define your own settings on the exposure, f-stop, etc. and save them as a macro.

The video is amazing. Any of the HD settings will take good video, so it's really up to the user to decide what matters more, higher resolution but less shooting time or lower (but still HD) resolution and more movie before you have to switch SD cards. I hook the camera up directly to my 1080p TV to watch the videos and they are truly incredible. I don't see any motion blur or pixelation, even in low light shooting (my daughter and I on a carousel at the county fair, for example).

Photo lag is practically nonexistent (and it has a burst mode if you really need several pictures taken per second). I was taking pictures at an ocean-based attraction park in Orlando (I'm not sure if I can use trademarked names here, but you know where I mean) and I have pictures, not in burst mode, of a dolphin jumping out of the water, the dolphin at the top of its jump, the dolphin about half-way back into the water, and the splash...so four pictures in a little over a second.

I don't use the GPS functionality often, but I have taken a couple pictures while hiking that were just too stunning a view not to be able to find it again, so turn on the GPS, imprint the location onto the photo, then turn the GPS back off to save the battery (it does seem to be quite the battery hog).

The only less-than-perfect mark I can give this camera is that it uses a special battery instead of cheap, rechargeable AA's like my previous camera. But you can buy backup batteries either made by Panasonic (not cheap, or course) or 3rd-party like the ones in the kit I bought TheZipKit for PANASONIC BCG-10. Includes: 2 BCG-10 1200mAh Ultra High Capacity Batteries made with cells produced in JAPAN or USA, Table-Top Wire Tripod, 110/240 Mini Charger with fold out plug and a DC car adapter, SD/SDHC Card Reader, LCD Protection F...

The LCD view screen is large, can show lots of information or get everything out of your way depending on the settings you choose. I like how it reads your SD card, computes, and shows you right on the LCD how many pictures or how many minutes of video you still have room for!

The lens is so good I'm actually quite surprised to find it on a camera at this price.
The camera has pretty much every function you'll ever need or want.
Uses SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards, so you'll never run out of memory. (I have a 16GB SDHC card in mine and have never come close to filling it...that will hold a couple hundred pictures PLUS nearly 2 hours of video on the lower HD setting and still not be full! But I carry an 8GB card in the case just in case.)

Even with the silly battery thing (I'd hate to not have the couple backups I bought because if your battery dies, you're out of luck for an hour at least, and that's if you have your charger with you and can find a place to plug it in...I really prefer AA batteries in portable devices) this camera gets a strong 5 out of 5. (I would give it 97 out of 100 if we could be that precise on Amazon ratings.)
