The Panasonic TA-1 Ultrathin HD Pocket Camcorder totally amazes me. Here is a unit that is as small and light as a cell phone, yet can produce 1080p video with sound! I remember back to when I was a kid and desperately wanted an 8mm movie camera. Lousy picture quality, expensive film and even more expensive developing costs, and the added expense of a projector with lamps that always went out. OH yeah, and there was NO sound and a cost prohibitive price.
Well, times have sure changed. I will admit I am just not up on the latest marvels of video and photography and probably overly impressed with this unit. I personally have found no issues with the build quality, although you had better shell out right away for a good protective case to keep your lens scratch free.
The rear controls are pretty easy to use, mostly straightforward. Yes, you might get a glitch here and there as with ALL types of electronic equipment that are remotely related to computers. I have just learned to accept a slight glitch here and there like when you used to have to bang on the top of your old tube TV set whenever the horizontal hold went out. With a little use and practice, you can operate this thing easily. I am an old school boomer and it didn't take me too long to get the hang of it. Sometimes just rebooting the thing will get you out of whatever trouble you might find yourself in if it hangs during a particular function. Yeah, I know it should not be the case but what can you do?
With the built in digital zoom (which really works well) , the led function for low light , and auto focus The Panasonic TA-1 makes taking both moving pictures and extracting stills comparatively easy. The quality is far beyond what I was expecting and as with all new electronics a little bit of practice and experience will make all the difference in the end results. I have not tried uploading any videos to the web and probably won't. Importing them into my computer is very easy though.
The built in mic is adequate but unfortunately there is no jack for an external mic of better quality. Hey, you get sound and it works! Not bad, not bad at all. Truly, my only complaints have to do with the need for memory cards (and their expense) and the relatively short battery life. Plan on carrying at least one spare set of batteries if you are on a trip or not close to some AC for recharging.
This camera sure beats the heck out of my old Kodak Instamatic and Bell and Howell 8mm movie camera from back in the stone age, and is priced so that just about anyone can afford it. It's almost time for the Holiday's and this thing is gonna get a ton of use. Cool!
